Paws step by Paw Step

Silverwing had found her silver coated figure emerging from the shadowclan's entrance. A soft welcoming, new-leaf breeze tickled her chin. But she found it as a joke, for leaf-bare was barely done with the forest cats. The soft dripping of water could be heard from anywhere within the pine forest. The sun sparkled as it slowly rose in the sky, sighing Silverwing drew in a breath of fresh, brilliant air.

Turning her narrowed feature's to Brokenwing she meowed warmly,
"Ah, the sun feels nice today." Blinking she brought her silver snout to the sky, a single cloud wasn't in sight.

"But it won't last long." She meowed sadly, her eyes gazed around her surroundings. Pines, tall and proud, stood everywhere she looked. The drip-drop of water echoed amongst her ears, while the scent of water-logged earth filled her nose.

"Soon the cold winds of leaf-bare will reach us once again..."Her voice trailed off as she thought of the bitter cold winds, the large snow-drifts. She also thought of the shortage of prey.

"Perhaps we could bring back some prey?" Her voice trailed off once more, "So maybe then the clan can realize we're both not as useless as we appear." A small reassuring smile flickered on her lips for a second before her eyes found themselves on the sky once more, "We still have the day ahead of us."

Brokenwing stood a little bit off from Silverwing, her head angled up at the clear sky. She couldn't remember the other leaf-bares being so clear so late in the season. Usually when the spring would drift in the clouds would gather and deposit the last reminder of winter, a pile of snow to later be melted away by the warming rays and eventual fall of rain. Brokwing missed the gentle pitter-patter, dark nights of thunder and lightning had settled her into slumber easier than the howl of the winter wind or the silent fall of snow. She hated the silence, at times, and watching the white, condensed liquid come down from the sky only made her more and more wary of it. It reminded her of life before her accident, of moons where she had spent in complete quiet. Not a word being said, and yet she still moved. A drifting snowflake just to gather among the other ones that created layers on the ground.

"It's a rather odd dry spell that we are having, don't you think?" Brokenwing commented airily, turquoise-gold eyes flickering down from the blue-frost sky. "Never before has leaf-bare seemed so strange." Her voice floated out of her throat with a poetic ease and the accompany it a twitch of her nose. It smelled of wet and damp things. She did not know what to make of this season. "I certainly hope not, though it seems that things are always rather unlucky with me. If leaf-bare decides to be nicer in these next couple of moons we might only have a couple more weeks of cold." She smiled in hope. Someone had to hope, she decided it could be her.

The young tortie she-cat's eyes widened for the second time today as Silverwing commented on the prospect of hunting. She hadn't tried it much since her legs departure from her body, but she always thought that it'd be interesting to see how easy or hard it'd be to pounce down on something. She had always relied on the techniques of her training before, her apprenticeship teaching her to carefully skim the ground will her paws as she snuck up upon the creature. It was all about stealth in the thin pines. There was no thick undergrowth to hide in, nor for the prey to hide in. Everything was based on stillness, or how easy it was to bring one's self into a statue-esque state. She knew that she might not be able to perform as she had before, but there could be some promise in that proposition.

She looked down at the ground for a quick moment before glancing back up at Silverwing, "I think that sounds like an interesting idea. I would love to try and hunt again. Surely the fact that I am mssing one leg won't completely unbalance me." She grinned and hobbled forward, her paws squeezing mud between her sheathed claws. "Many things can happen in one day, and we have the whole day to look forward too."

The woman began to journey past where the two of them were standing, her hobble barely hindering her as she would've thought it would. After wandering around under the eye of the medicine cat and others she had a decent grip on what she could and couldn't do when wandering. She really had no problems moving through the trees, listening from the prey that would be crawling slowly through the terrain after being woken by the warmth that was so foriegn in these months. She couldn't help but smile at the thought of it as she came to stand beside one of the thicker pine trunks. A squirrel was chattering above, though it did not see her. She could not climb, but perhaps it would come down sooner or later. She turned her gaze back at Silverwing, hoping to see her coming.

Silverwing followed silently, she had meant to comment on Brokenwing's musings as she spoke of such an odd leaf-bare. She had agreed more or less, this leaf-bare had been quite strange. First there had been horrible storms, but slowly it started growing warm once again. Although she had only lived throughout one winter before she remembered it being much--different.

Blinking her leaf colored eyes she found herself padding towards an aged pine. It's needles weren't as dark, the scent wasn't nearly as sharp. Tiny rivers of water worked it's way around the discarded tree. Following the multiple stream's currents she found them weaving in out of the trees as they flowed down into the lake.

Smiling she weaved her own way through the pines until she was only a mouse-length away from Brokenwing.
"Although it might be a dry-spell, I'm sure the melting snow will help." she meowed thoughtfully as she listened to the quiet drip-drop of the descending droplets. Blinking she lifted her snout towards the lake and opened her mouth, many scents drifted in.

She found herself scenting the squirrel above but chose to ignore, No way could I climb a tree in my current condition. She thought angrily, as she found herself envy of her warrior days. But she ended up deciding on a perfect arrangement.

"How about we hunt down near where the trees border the shoreline?"Silverwing could scent the prey from where she stood, and her claws trembled just thinking about it.

"The shoreline sounds good. If any creatures are hopping about now-a-days, it seems as good a place as any to be down by the shore. Good access to water and other good things," Brokenwing mused the movement of the prey all of the around her. She, too, had seen the rustling of the squirrels flitting about the trees about them. But, with her missing leg, it'd be nearly impossible to climb that tree without falling half-way up. She could get some of a grip, but that would be lost in moments. She did not want to be tumbling down to the earth above after only being up for a couple of moments. That'd be embarrassing, she'd blush like mad in front of Silverwing, who she'd expect to actually laugh at her. It wouldn't be cruel, the laugh, or at least that was what the tortie hoped. Silverwing wasn't like that. Again, this was hope.

She slipped past Silverwing, her slow movements made to both accomdate her general pace and the one in which the pregnant Silverwing would have to move at. It'd be cruel of her to leave the woman behind. She had been kind enough to leave camp with her, though she could tell in those moments it was the dream of the other woman to rid herself of thoughts of children for a couple of moments. A hunt was the perfect choice. At least, that was what Brokenwing thought it would be. The way that the gray girl had been acting before had shown her that.

As the already spread wide trees began to thin, Brokenwing had caught herself thinking about her childhood and where Silverwing had been in it all. She couldn't remember her silver face sticking itself in there anywhere, either with her or with her sister. The social network that she could recall did not include a Silverkit, but she had been very focused on her sister during those moons. "Did you sneak out of camp when you were a kitten? I can't remember if I did or not." She blinked, trying to look for clues of Silverwing's kitten life. She hated to be someone to pry, as she was insecure about herself in general, but she found it curious that she couldn't remember anything at all about her.

The warmer breeze settled against her face, blowing some of the longer hairs back as she drew closer to the edge of the trees. Somewhere among her thoughts her nose drew her to attention, the tantalizing smell of mouse lingering on the edges of a near-by tree. She was curious. She hadn't hunted in moons, the elders den and the little walks leading to less exciting things. The rush of things as an apprentice, the influx of adrenile and the movement of her claws, came back to her in a moment. She could not forget, even if it had been tens of moons. She would recall her warrior roots.

She turned suddenly, leaving behind the feelings to gaze back at Silverwing. "I... I'm going to try," she mumbled, almost embarrassed. She quickly moved back to her old position, but now began to slowly slink towards the trees where shade used by the ShadowClanners was provided. She was silent, the lack of one of her legs making her even more quiet that she was normally. She would catch it, she was assured when she struck out suddenly. But, her claws barely grazed the thing. It squeaked and flew off, away from her. She bit down on her lip in frustration. Her tail flicked and she didn't look back at Silverwing, too embarrassed.

Silverwing turned to the she-cat and grinned,
"Not only did I sneak out of camp I kept it alive with my childish pranks, and lively manner."she spoke proudly. The grin still was plastered across his silver muzzle, although inside her heart clenched tightly within it's confines. She thought of Glacierkit her icy-blue gaze haunted her soul. While Adderkit's whiny voice still range in her ears. But what she remembered was her mother's voice as her father ruthlessly murdered her.

Her father, that retched cat that had looked just like her. She looked just like him. Gulping down the lump that had arose in her throat, she tried her best to keep te grin there. But soon it too was gone.

"Do you recall, the murdering of Dreamong, Glacierkit, and Adderkit?"she meowed quietly. She wasn't sure if she remembered Brokenwing at all she recalled catching a glimpse of her here and there, but otherwise the kit had been unknown to her at the time.

Shaking her head she sighed, but instantly her eyes sparked with life as Brokenwing attempted her kill. She had hoped and slightly expected the she-cat to make her kill but alas Brokenwing had missed.
"Nice try, I'm sure you'll get it next time." she meowed out reassuringly. Gently she padded up to the she-cat and laid a tail on her shoulder,

"There's got to be something in those bushes over there." she meowed flicking her tail towards the neatly arranged bushes and small undergrowth. She could easily scent the mice scurrying under the dead leaves.
"It's all yours."
