eclipseclaw
she-cat ● twenty-six moons ● loner
tattered black she-cat with green eyes
A P P E A R A N C E
At one point she might have been pretty. She's thin, painfully thin. As a former windclan warrior Eclipseclaw was always skinny - but now her bones stick out from beneath her skin. Her fur is ruffled and dirty - slick with slime. The she-cat isn't tall, but due to malnourishment she appears gangly and stringy. She has dull, yellowed teeth and large hollow eyes. Littered with ticks and fleas, Eclipseclaw's body has become a living, breathing breeding ground for blood-sucking parasites.
Before, she was thin, beautiful even. She had short, sleek black fur and bright emerald green eyes. Her face was narrow, sculpted and donned with high-cheek bones. Her nose was a charcoal black and her eyes - her eyes. They were big on her face, large captivating orbs. Against her midnight pelt her eyes stood out like two glittering stars.
But the lights went out.
Her paws are cracked and bloody. Scars stretch across her pelt in broken lines. A deep 'v' cuts into her left ear, and that toothy, lop-sided grin has vanished. Instead an empty grimace curls into her chest. Her once defiant chin had ruled the sky, she was proud and she carried herself that way. Now even her tail drags in the dust. Everything is duller, dirtier - gone.

She was always nasty - long before any of this other shit happened. She grew up with a grudge against the world. She hated everyone and everything. Her heart was guarded with nails and chains - her voice sour and sharp. Eclipseclaw was mean. As an apprentice she nearly killed a kit for insulting her. She'd pick fights just for breathing. The she-cat walked with her claws unsheathed, a fire in her eyes, and ice in her chest. She wasn't going to let anyone in - she was sure - she was sure?
And then she met Riverspirit. The she-cat refused to take Eclipseclaw's crap and clawed her way into her heart. She began to realize that life wasn't that bad. She didn't make any other friends, but she learned that she could care about others. She also learned that she was capable of love. When she was with her mate, or with her friends she was strangely affectionate. Not in the conventional way but in a kind of, pathetic enduring way. She never wore her emotions on her sleeve; she never gave compliments, or mused adoringly. Instead she showed her love with insults, and sarcastic remarks.
Eclipseclaw never thought rationally. A lot of her actions were impulsive. She never doted on a thought or planned her outings in advanced. She made things happen. The majority of her denmates despised her, and when she chose to leave the clan they didn't put up a fight. It didn't bother the she-cat any; she was fiercely independent and favored to be alone. There were only a few cats she could put up with anyway.
She never really believed in starclan, and with the downward spiral of her life - her faith has only continued to slip. She supposes that a loner shouldn't believe in starclan anyway, especially her.
The she-cat refuses to be pitied. She doesn't like to be dependent on others. When Lightning was still alive she would get bitter with him over simple, nonchalant gestures of gratitude. He would wake her up with breakfast or bring her water-soaked moss on particularly parched days and it drove her insane. She felt useless, and if there was one thing she hated, it was feeling as if she didn't matter.
Post death; his death, Eclipseclaw's gone into a comatose state. She kind of just exists, and it's barely qualified as that. The former warrior hardly eats, doesn't wander much, and spends her days slipping in and out of consciousness. She hasn't used her voice in months. She's not even sure if she has one any more. Instead she's left alone with her thoughts; perhaps starclan's worst punishment.

Her brothers died at three moons old. Eclipsekit watched, wide eyed as the warriors dragged them out of camp - their limp bodies barely touched the ground - they were so small. It was the end of leaf-bare and the camp was ravaged by green-cough. Freezekit and Midnightkit were helpless against the disease, most kits were. Eclipsekit spent the next week in solitude. She didn't want to play. At three moons she was already angry with the world and everything made her upset.
Bitter, Eclipsekit would pick fights with the other kits. After a few days everyone knew to give her space. She was a mess - a monster. Except for Riverkit - Riverkit was arrogant, bossy, and she didn't take shit from anyone. Eclipsekit was a thorn in her pelt, and she wasn't going to let it get to her. It drove Eclipsekit insane.
At six moons old Eclipsekit became an apprentice. Hazelstar was hesitant to let her begin training - she was rude, disrespectful, and unfit for Windclan - still, the leader was determined to set her straight. Stormsong, a wise, gentle old soul had been assigned her mentor. The tom was baffled by her negativity and did his best to change her attitude. To his dismay Eclipsepaw remained bitter as ever and refused to take him seriously. She was driving everyone insane.
Riverpaw set her straight.
"What in starclan's name do you want?" The she-cat hissed angrily, her eyes cross. Eclipsepaw gave Riverpaw the haughtiest glare, what is she trying to pull. Riverpaw narrowed her eyes in return, "What are you doing in Riverclan territory?" The apprentice accused dryly, "We're not allowed to cross the border? Or are you too stupid to remember that?" Eclipsepaw scrunched her nose, her ears flattened against her skull - she opened her mouth to speak but nothing left her tongue. "Did I finally shut you up?" Riverpaw mused.
"Shut up."
The two apprentices got in a lot of trouble that day. A riverclan patrol had spotted them trespassing and sent them straight to Hazelstar's den. They were forced to clean bedding for the next moon. Eclipsepaw would never admit it but she regained a sense of respect for her denmate that day. Instead of blaming the event entirely on Eclipsepaw - Riverpaw had accepted her punishment with dignity. The two eventually became inseparable.
And then lightning struck.
At twelve moons old Eclipsepaw became a warrior. They named her Eclipseclaw in honor of her 'fighting' spirit. Riverpaw rolled her eyes at that. Her first outing as a warrior changed her life. She met him. Lightning, a rogue with a sharp tongue. He was dangerous, gruff, and exciting. They met at the peak of a hill. He had been mourning the loss of his former mate and Eclipseclaw had threatened him for being on Windclan territory.
The two hit it off almost immediately.
Weary at first, Eclipseclaw tried to ignore her feelings. But as the days went by she found herself thinking about the older tom. There was something about him and it was driving her insane. She had to see him again. So she did. They would meet every other night for moons. And eventually they were in love.
She opened up to him. She told him things she couldn't even tell Riverspirit. And slowly her loyalties were beginning to drift. Eclipseclaw had finally found someone she could be a part of - and he was against the rules - she couldn't have him.
So she left.
It broke Riverspirit's heart, but she was happy because for once in her life Eclipseclaw was truly happy. The clan watched her go with a remorseful pretense. They weren't sad - none of them were. How could they miss someone they so full-heartedly resented? Riverspirit had been the only thing keeping Eclipseclaw in Windclan.
They lived on the moorland for a year. The idea of kits popped up every now and then, but they both decided that children would only complicate the relationship. They were happy with what they had - why try and change it?
She was twenty-two moons when he died. She always knew that she'd outlive him. He was thirty moons older than her - she just - not like this.
"Lightning!" The she-cat's screech pierced the air as teeth snapped viciously above the she-cat's head. A pair of beady, black eyes met her frightened orbs - large, dripping jowls slapped together with a bite. The she-cat flattened herself against the wall of their den. She could feel death tug at her paws, pulling her closer, closer, closer - the she-cat closed her eyes, a prayer on her breath.
Suddenly the dog let out a yelp and he was gone. The she-cat opened her eyes, her heart hammered beneath her chest. "Lightning?" She called out, her voice horse. And then she saw the dog turn outside of the den, a long, grey body flung from his jowls. She watched his body hit the ground with a thud, she watched the dog rip out his throat, she watched his blood stain the moorland. She opened her mouth - nothing.
The she-cat bolted from their den with vengeance in her heart. Tears brimmed her eyes as she launched herself onto the dog and clawed her life into his flesh. The dog howled beneath her claws, it bucked and rolled, trying to dislodge the she-cat, and still she clung on. A screech left her lips, choking between sobs she bit viciously into the beast - trying to bring him back, trying, trying, trying. The she-cat went limp, her claws retracted, and she slithered to the ground in defeat.
The dog turned tail and fled.
Eclipseclaw found herself buried in his pelt, tears spilled into his soul, and she wept. The she-cat sobbed uncontrollably for hours until she could cry no longer, and then she stayed there until the dawn crawled into the sky turning her pink.
Two lives were taken that day.
Eclipseclaw managed to pull herself together and arrange a proper burial for her mate. She sat a silent vigil for three days. She couldn't eat, she couldn't sleep, she couldn't think. He was gone and so was she.
A moon went by and Eclipseclaw found herself entering Windclan's camp. A lot of her denmates were dead. Just like him. Sunstar watched the she-cat with melancholy in her heart - there was nothing she could do.

"Is Riverpirit on patrol? Did I just miss her?" Eclipseclaw mewed quietly, a small, appreciative smile on her lips - it didn't quite reach her eyes. Sunstar's features softened, "Eclipseclaw - Riverspirit is..." The Windclan leader paused, her eyes narrowed in concern, "Riverspirit is no longer with us."
Eclipseclaw blinked, her mouth opened and closed, and then she padded out of camp. There was nothing left for her here, "Eclipseclaw" Sunstar called out, the she-cat quickly trotted to her side, "She died bravely-" The leader stood before the she-cat, compassion in her voice, "She died for her clan." Eclipseclaw's eyes hardened, "She left me."
There was nothing for her anywhere.
