Sitting poised upon the great tree Hazelstar listened as each leader reported the usual. New kits; new apprentices; new warriors. New two-legs? That wasn't normal. She shifted her paws uneasily, was this another sign? The two-legs were increasing and not only that. They were bringing foul smelling creatures along with them. They weren't the normal monsters. They were huge; they smelled of death. Did they really belong? her talk with Suneye's emerged from the depths of her mind. Hazelstar had this feeling; this inkling that something was calling them back.
HAZELSTAR
I've been broken more than once.
Lightning struck the sky.
Hazelstar's eyes widened; the bright smoldering moon that hung so pleasantly in the sky was shadowed by clouds. "Starclan has spoken, this Gathering is over!" She screeched; her voice sliced through the silence. The bolt had shocked everyone. Cat's fur stood on end; eyes wide as saucers. Groggily the began to move. With powerful muscles she leaped from the Great Tree. Hazelstar summoned Windclan around her with the sweep of her tail. The clouds swirled above. The cold snow crunched under her paws; no rain nor snow fell, but the earth collided above. Thunder and lighting clashed; driving cats into chaos. "Hold your ground! Windclan is last to leave." Her eyes swept through her warriors. They were frightened but she knew they'd stay by her until they died. She was proud.
Cat by cat they gradually exited the island. Hazelstar knew she would be the last one to leave tonight. She was startled beyond belief. What had been so wrong about this gathering? There had been no disputes. For once they were getting along, and yet Starclan ended it. What if this wasn't Starclan? There were times in the past where Storms had threatened the sacred meetings. But never in the mid of lead-bare; not when snow still covered the ground.
It was her time to cross the log, hesitantly she leaped onto it's slippery surface. Her eyes trailed back to the Great Tree. It's roots glistened as lightning lit up the sky. It's powerful trunk; long, elegant limbs. Her stomach tumbled and twisted. Why do I feel as if I'm saying goodbye? This feeling was so strange, surely this wasn't her last gathering? Swallowing away her worry she crossed the log. As her paws hit the snow she heard an earth-shattering boom. Smoke; she could smell the fire before she saw it. Whipping around she watched in horror as the tree-bridge was burnt to ashes. Lightning from the sky had destroyed it; just as lightning had brought it here. Trembling in fear she watched as it cracked; smoldered; as it tumbled into the lake. Then it vanished, seconds later it resurfaced. It was hardly a log no more.
"Great Starclan." She breathed. No longer could they cross it's trunk to get to the island. Only those brave enough to face the waters could get there now. She swallowed once more; what were they to do? Her clan stood motionless beside her; there eyes shivered with disbelief. "Let's return-" Her voice echoed in the eerie silence, "Let's all return."
The sign was here.
