The large tom slowly stopped walking as he reached the large burnt tree and looked up at it for a long moment. He wasn't sure what it was but this tree, it meant a lot to him. But he still couldn't figure out what. Why did he feel so attached to this tree? Why did he feel like he had to come here to think clearly. He knew his father...no grandfather....brought him here all the time as a kit. Would tell him stories that would fill his mind with wonder. He sighed and slowly walked closer to the ashed tree.
Ashpaw sat down in the snow that had fallen and just watched as birds would land near by on or the branches then would fly away. They never stayed for long, as if they knew he was there. Didn't matter much right now anyway. He wasn't hunting. He probably should before he headed back to camp but he just wanted to sit here and listen. He wanted to try to remember why it was so important to him. But every time he tried the memory slipped further and further away. He sighed and looked at his paws some.
Hearing something behind him, he quickly turned and spun on the spot, claws out and ready for whatever had secretly come up on him. He scanned the shadows around him but he couldn't' see anything. No scent met his nose then he realized the wind was blowing the wrong way. The snow wouldn't help either. He kept scanning for any movements. May he could just leave, but no. That wasn't the way he was. He would stand and fight until he knew for sure he couldn't win.
however the cat stepped out and his ears went back in slight irritation. It was Emberheart, the Shadowclan and his mentor. He sat back down as she came over to him.
"You know you don't have to come check on me all the time, right?" he mewed softly, louder than he usually was, but still not loud, "I was about to head back anyway. Can't find what i was looking for."
He knew his mentor cared about him, like she did the rest of the camp. He didn't mind, but at times he did want to think alone. But again, having Emberheart around made him feel better as well. He could let his guard down around her. But honestly he didn't even know why he had his guard up in the first place.
