Reading the World {{Open}}

The young off white tom slowly slid out of the nursery and stretched some looking around the busy camp. Cats were moving around and talking, but nothing reached his ears. a few free birds flew over head and the wind made the ferns in the camp rustle, but again, nothing reached his ears. Cedarkit was used to this. He hadn't been able to hear anything for the past 7 moons. He had been Deaf since birth and now he was alone. No mom, no dad, no brothers or sisters: The Orphan of Riverclan.
Once he was nice and stretched out he slowly padded over to the fresh-kill pile and picked out a very small mouse out of the pile. He was a kit, so he deserved the smallest amount of food. He had already accepted the fact that the leader would probably place him in the elder's den instead of making him an apprentice. What could a deaf cat do for his clan? Finding a warm sunny spot he settled down and started eating quietly. He didn't mind the quiet, but it would be nice to hear just one voice. He could watch all the cats around the clan and be able to see what they were talking about. A relationship scandal here, an apprentice getting in trouble there. It was always the same thing. No one ever came to talk to him though. Why did he expect anything different?

Lightflower found her self sitting by her self, just off the warriors den. She started to run her tongue through her light coloured fur. Her tongue washed over her well groomed fur, only catching on slight knots that had formed and moss she had gathered while sleeping. After she was satisfied her fur was well groomed, her eyes looked around the camp before noticing a young white tom with pretty bi-coloured eyes. She heard the warrior talking about this tom, Cedarkit if she remembered right.

Her yellow eyes fixed on the young tom, someone once told her he was deaf. She couldn't imagine what it was like. Her ears started to rotate to hear all the sounds of the forest. She heard the running of the river and the chirping of the birds to high for her to hunt. She got to her paws, and slowly walked over to the tom. She moved slowly towards him and made sure she was in view not to scare the tom. She gave a small nod of a greeting, "Hello, Cedarkit is it?" she spoke a little slower then usual. She didn't know how much good it was. She didn't know if the white kitten in front of her could lip read.

Cedarkit kept watching the warriors, trying to recall names. It was hard since most of the time he had to go off of lip reading, and some cats spoke too fast for him to catch it. He blinked and wrapped his tail around his paws quietly. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a cat coming that way from where the warrior's den was and turned his head to look at the white and grey she-cat. She stopped and nodded at her in greeting before saying something, much slower that she was probably used to. He fought the smile that threatened to appear.

"Yes. That my name," he mewed, his voice having an odd tone to it. His ear flicked knowing he missed a word. He could just tell. It was the way it felt in his throat. He was supposed to feel five different things. He only felt four. Oh well, he would just have to learn to focus on it more. He looked back at the she-cat and didn't have to think to know her name. "How ah you today, Ligh-Fower?"

His tail flicked some as he focused on her mouth. That was the only thing he felt awkward about. He could never fully make eye contact unless he was talking. It was his only way of understanding what was being said. Cats didn't use body language and gestures to talk. It made it harder for him, but he knew, if he wanted to find a place in this clan, he would have to learn to cope with it. He was just glad that someone was actually talking to him and not trying to avoid him.
